A lot has gone on in our neck of the woods since our last post. As you may know, Southern Alberta was struck with extremely damaging floods. This June and July have been extremely trying times for many families in Calgary, High River, and many other Southern Albertan towns and communities.
Our Commitment to Helping
Here at Birchwood Furniture Galleries, we have been doing our part to help our friends, family, and greater community. Birchwood Furniture Galleries has supported the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) since our opening in 2009. We believe in their cause, and doing what we can to help local and international development and relief. We’d like to share with you a little about MCC.
About MCC
MCC is a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches, that share their spirituality, love and compassion by responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice. MCC works with communities worldwide to build relationships with God, one another and creation. MCC works in 60 countries worldwide in areas of relief, development and peace.
MCC Relief
MCC strives to meet urgent needs in areas torn by disaster or war and to reach out to people forced to flee from their homes. MCC provides food aid such as relief kits and blankets in the days or weeks following a disaster and continues to partner with churches, organizations and communities for months or even years.
MCC in Alberta
Within Alberta, MCC generally does peace promotion work with people of all ages, works to settle refugees in the province, collects material resources (blankets, school supplies, relief supplies and more) for shipment overseas, does chaplaincy and visitation work with prisoners, promotes awareness and raises funds for international HIV/AIDS awareness, promotion and education. To learn more about these projects and more, visit The Alberta MCC Website.
In response to the Alberta Flood, MCC is working closely with the Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS), together with their network of other church organizations and the government Emergency Management Agency. Due to the severity of the situation, MDS, along with their many volunteers, is currently working at helping affected residents to dig out and clean flooded basements and homes.
Thrift Store Contributions
Along with our main upholstery supplier, Birchwood Furniture, we donate any dented or damaged merchandize to MCC Thrift Stores. This is another way MCC raises funds for their worldwide projects. When people buy from MCC, they know they will find affordable prices, are helping the environment by re-using, and best of all, supporting a great cause!
Want to get involved? Outside of ordering from Birchwood Furniture Galleries, MCC Thrift Stores, or donating directly to MCC, MCC is ALWAYS looking for volunteers! To learn how to help out, check out their volunteer connection page for details.
Need Relief?
So we’ve gone over how we help and how you can contribute to the cause. But what if you are someone in need of help? If you are a homeowner or renter affected by the floods, and are in need of all new furniture, please come by the store. We at Birchwood Furniture Galleries are extremely sympathetic to your situation. We are here to help as best as we can. We want to go above and beyond in your time of need. With order times as quick as 5-7 weeks for pieces made in Calgary just for you, we have an edge over other local stores that only import.
Not only this, we understand the circumstances of your situation. If you need your order stored until your restoration work is ready for you to move it, we can do it. We are also offering flood victims the best prices we can on our products. Come into the store for more details.
Feeling overwhelmed and not sure where to start? Our design consultants are here to help! We are professionally trained and have the experience to boot to help you put your colour schemes, and furniture orders together with confidence.
